Wildfire Season 2025

Wildfire season is here, and we want to proactively keep residents and visitors to Flin Flon informed!

We’ve set up this webpage where we will be logging all of the City of Flin Flon's wildfire notices through the summer, so you can find the most up-to-date notices regarding fire restrictions, road closures, and more within the City of Flin Flon's jurisdiction.

We may report information from the broader region when we directly receive it or spot it online. However, residents should also follow other community communication channels as they relate to you, including the Town of Creighton, Town of The Pas, The Village of Denare Beach, and the Province of Manitoba to ensure they're receiving all relevant information.

We will also be sharing information through social media and CFAR as well, but our goal is to keep a one-stop shop for the most up-to-date information here!

To report a wildfire, call 1-800-782-0076, or simply 9-11. To report a fire in the community, call 9-11.

For a map of wildfires in the province this season, visit Manitoba Fireview here.

Welcome home! We hope you’re travelling safe, and we can’t wait to see you in the community.

We will be at the Wellness Centre today, tomorrow, and Friday, from 9:00am to 7:00pm.

We have food, mental health services, public health, a community dietitician, and the Red Cross is handing out hygiene and cleaning kits.

When you come to the Wellness Centre, come around to the Zamboni door to enter. It’s wheelchair accessible.

The Wellness Centre is for everyone in our area: Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach, Cranberry Portage, cottages, etc.

A huge thank you to the Northern Neighbours Foundation, who gives large amounts of donations to our region, and have supported the food bank for the last 10 years.

We also have masks here to help protect people from smoke throughout the summer.

They will be coming to the Whitney Forum to present the Flin Flon Food Bank with a $50, 000 cheque to offset the costs of the Food Bank this month.

They are a great option if you want to donate locally to support relief efforts and future community initiatives in general.

Buses are being loaded or have departed from southern Manitoba as we speak.

If you slipped through the cracks and missed the bus, please email info@flinflon.ca and we will connect you with the right people to get you home.

On Wednesday, Everyone is Welcome Back. Everyone!

We've had a lot of inquiries about who is permitted to return to Flin Flon tomorrow. The answer is: everyone.

Your family can travel with you to help you unpack, settle in, and make sure you're okay, whether they are Flin Flon residents or not.

There will be no barriers between Flin Flon and Creighton after Wednesday morning as well.

All we ask is that everyone returns with respect for their neighbours finding their way and settling back home, the emergency workers still managing the fires outside of town, the businesses working hard to serve their community again, and the people in our area who may have lost their homes.

See you tomorrow!

Today, Mayor and Council met via Zoom and passed a resolution to rescind the mandatory evacuation order on June 25, at 9:00am.

That means the community can come in and out as usual.

Please take your time on the highway, it will be busy. Please do not stop on the highway to take pictures or hold up traffic. There are still fire crews out, and safety is our top priority.

We also need to be mindful of loss for our community members. Keep your travel to a minimum, and please be respectful of those who have lost property in our area.

The City is working to identify everyone who requires transportation home. Please email us at info@flinflon.ca. We are working with the Canadian Red Cross to reach people in Winnipeg, but we also recognize there are people scattered across the province, and we do not want anyone left behind.

There will be multiple coaches and departure times on Wednesday. Once we have all the muster points down, we will announce them tomorrow and let everyone know through our regular channels (Facebook, Instagram, Flin Flon Connect, Website).

When we evacuated, 588 people used transportation to leave Flin Flon. Right now, we only have about 300 accounted for, so we want to hear from you to ensure you are not missed.

We are having a Welcome Centre established at the Whitney Forum: it will be open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. We will have the Canadian Red Cross there to answer any questions.

We will also have disaster and recovery assistance from the Manitoba Emergency Association, who can answer some of your questions moving forward, as well as mental health supports, public health,

We have partnered with the food bank to provide both perishable and non-perishable foodstuffs and hygiene kits for everyone in the community, including Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach, Cranberry Portage, etc. We have accommodated numbers reflecting the greater region.

Inpatient Returns to Flin Flon, June 23, 2025, 3:32pm

We understand that there are residents of Flin Flon who have, for various reasons, been hospitalized outside of Flin Flon in various hospitals across the province.

The Flin Flon Hospital is currently only providing emergency care. Patients hospitalized elsewhere in the province will be able to be transferred once inpatient services are reopened.

If you or a person in your care is a resident of Flin Flon hospitalized in Manitoba, let your inpatient Care Team know that you would like to discuss your return to the Flin Flon Hospital once inpatient services are available.

Mandatory Evacuation Order Will Officially Lift June 25 + Wildfire Fighting Update, June 23, 2025, 12:14pm

Fire suppression efforts are going exceptionally well, especially with the precipitation we received over the weekend.

The area of concern near East Trout Lake has been mitigated and is now “cold”. The northern area of town is considered “very stable”.

Mitigating the Mandy Lake Mine Road area is ongoing. Crews remain camped out and more personnel are being deployed to the area.

A burn-off on the northwestern shore of Little Athapap has helped mitigate the risk to the area.

Hot spots remain in the Little Spruce Area and down North Star Road, but infrared scans continue to detect them, and crews continue to control the situation.

We are starting to demobilize property protection in the cottage areas.

We are exceptionally pleased to announce that conditions allow for Council to officially lift the Mandatory Evacuation Order, effective June 25, 2025 at 9:00am.

We have been able to protect the whole city and most of the cottage country area.

You will still see smoke in the area, but all of these areas are being actively managed to protect the community and its residents. This may be the case for the next few months.

There are masks available for those who are sensitive to wildfire smoke.

Please remember that cottage country outside of Flin Flon city limits does not fall within the City of Flin Flon’s authority. Mandatory evacuation orders may persist outside of Flin Flon city limits.

Please refer to the appropriate authorities for the most accurate information.

Flin Flon Re-Entry Update, June 20, 2025, 8:23pm

View the video update here:

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Ae33BnEou/

Mandatory Evacuation Order is set to be lifted on Wednesday, June 25 at 9:00am.

That means everyone in the community is welcome home. There will be no restrictions related to the evacuation after that time.

People who require daily or weekly services from the hospital may consider remaining evacuated until hospital services in Flin Flon are fully restored, as those services may not be available.

People have asked us whether the Canadian Red Cross will continue to support people staying in Winnipeg because they require medical care that is not available in Flin Flon.

The Canadian Red Cross has informed us that they “will continue to provide emergency accommodation and food to people who have been identified as being unable to return home upon re-entry in Flin Flon, due to some health services not being immediately available in the community.”

Flin Flon, Saskatchewan residents fall under our municipality, and therefore under our evacuation notice.

We have heard that there has been a lack of support from the Red Cross for our residents of Flin Flon, Saskatchewan.

If you were one of those people who did not receive support because you were on the Saskatchewan side of Flin Flon, email us at info@flinflon.ca with your name, address, and a brief description of your experience. We are advocating with our MLA, the Minister’s office, and the Red Cross. You should receive support and resources during such a difficult time.

As of 4:00pm today, Friday, June 20, the Red Cross Reception Centre in Winnipeg will be relocated to the Leila Soccer Complex at 770 Leila Avenue, open 24/7.

The reception at the Billy Mosienko Arena will be closed.

Bus loops transporting evacuees to the reception centres will continue to be available, though they will now be routed to the Leila Soccer Complex. Updated bus loops and other information are attached to this post.

We have received questions from evacuees inquiring about the availability of Red Cross support after June 25, 2025, should they remain in Winnipeg due to medical issues and concerns about hospital services.

We have sent out inquiries to try to learn more. However, it is vitally important that if you need to remain in Winnipeg due to medical issues, you reach out to the Red Cross immediately to flag your situation and obtain answers from the Red Cross directly.

Re-Entry Announcement with Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk, June 19, 2025, 8:16 pm

The mandatory evacuation order is currently expected to be lifted on June 25, 2025, at 9:00 am, barring unexpected fire behaviour between now and then. Watch the video update here:

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/14M5DBP45Y/

On May 28, ~5100 people evacuated from Flin Flon. The fire grew to ~350,000 hectares, or ~875,000 acres.

Our wildfire suppression team is a unified command made up of the City of Flin Flon (including the Fire Chief, CAO, EMO, and Flin Flon City Council), MB Wildfires, Office of the Fire Commissioner, Parks Canada, EMO Manitoba, and the U.S. Forest Service.

All critical services are currently ready to resume community duties except for the Flin Flon Fire Department. We expect that a fire team will be able to remain in town as of Saturday, June 21.

By Sunday, June 22, we hope to have skeleton crews in place to operate essential businesses, including Manitoba Hydro, telecommunications, food, fuel, and pharmacy services.

However, please know that the grocery store will have limited supplies.

These secondary businesses will be allowed to return on Saturday, including hardware, restaurants, clothing, automotive services, mail/shipping, and medical services, with the aim to be functional in a limited capacity by Monday, to prepare us for re-entry on Wednesday.

Secondary businesses returning to Flin Flon must fill out the re-entry form found at [url] and email it to jcapyk@flinflon.ca and mfunk@flinflon.ca before arriving.

On Monday, barring unexpected fire behaviour and all elements of the re-entry plan being accounted for, Mayor and Council will meet on Monday, June 23, to officially rescind the mandatory evacuation order effective Wednesday, June 25, at 9:00 am.

During re-entry, we will communicate with residents by Flin Flon Connect, through our website, and through social media.

RCMP and Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation will be present on the highway at re-entry points.

Please drive carefully, the highways will be busy.

Bring essentials with you, as supplies in the city will be limited for some time.

It is important to note that we will not have full health services in Flin Flon at this time, only the ER and Dr. Davidson-Meyer’s clinic. If you require services like X-rays, dialysis, or other advanced services, you may want to consider delaying your return.

For those who left Flin Flon by bus, we are working with the Canadian Red Cross to arrange transportation home. There will be muster points at each Red Cross location. No one, or their pets, will be left behind.

If you have any questions, message our Facebook page or email info@flinflon.ca.

We are very excited to announce this to the community. But please remember that not everything will be up and running in Flin Flon when we return. We need to be patient and mindful with our neighbours, and those who have the means should be prepared to bring essential supplies back with them to the community.

For those who cannot bring supplies back with them, we will establish the Wellness Centre in collaboration with Public Health, the food bank, Northern Neighbours, and Second Harvest to ensure there are some essential supplies like food and hygiene products available.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 18, 2025, 4:38pm

Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk and Fire Chief Jason Kuras have shared an update on the fire situation on the City of Flin Flon Facebook page. You can watch it here:

We have been conducting infrared scanning over the last two days to monitor for hot spots, and will continue to scan for them.

One area of concern is the area between Cliff Lake and Trout Lake that has continued to see flare-ups due to weather and considerable dryness.

Crews are deployed there, extinguishing hotspots and ensuring flare-ups in the area are contained, as the area has direct access to Flin Flon.

Another area of concern is the Mandy Lake Mine area, where firefighters are deployed putting out flare-ups and hotspots. Progress has been made, but access to the area is challenging, so crews have established a camp where members are camped directly on the fireline.

Crews are making significant progress in the airport area, allowing the team to have better access to the airport and its resources to help mitigate fires elsewhere.

Once the zone directly surrounding Flin Flon is under control, crews will be able to redeploy to areas further out that are not of immediate concern, but that may become a concern if left unaddressed.

One resident has asked what Hotshots are. Hotshots are a team typically comprised of 6-8 highly trained firefighters, currently deployed from the United States, who enter wildland zones and directly attack the fire.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 17, 2025, 10:06pm

Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk has shared a video update on the wildfire and re-entry planning, which you can watch here:

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1APSRf8ugK/

Yesterday, we posted a video with Fire Chief Jason Kuras, who explained the fire map, where crews are currently working, and the hotspot scanning and what it means for our community.

Scanning continued today, and we will share an updated video to discuss the results tomorrow.

Warm weather yesterday resulted in flare-ups at MacKenzie Point and Trout Lake, which have been actioned by ground crews with air support.

Following yesterday’s discussions with the Manitoba Health Minister, consultants have arrived to inspect the hospital’s ER for what needs to be completed before re-opening, and hospital staff are on their way to the city.

Dr. Davidson Meyer will be back in Flin Flon soon and will open her clinic up to the region as well.

We have a full complement of RCMP and EMS services, and the medical staff are now en route. We now need the fire surrounding the community to be under control, so that a team of City firefighters can be available for regular fire protection duty within the community.

Things are progressing in the right direction, but we remain in a state of emergency and under a mandatory evacuation notice.

The team managing the emergency response and collaborating on decisions includes the Office of the Fire Commissioner, Manitoba Wildfires, Parks Canada, Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization, the City of Flin Flon, and the Flin Flon Fire Department, with consultation from Denare Beach and Creighton.

We have invited everyone on the critical businesses list to return to Flin Flon to plan for reopening. If you were missed or need more information, email info@flinflon.ca, or call 204-271-1381.

Deputy Mayor Dallas Funk and Councillor Eagle are currently in Flin Flon. Dallas-Funk has been helping with food services, providing communications, and attending meetings. Councillor Eagle is supporting business liaison and performing animal wellness checks. The animal wellness team is feeding pets, changing litter boxes, etc.

We are beginning to contact secondary businesses tomorrow. If you need info about secondary businesses returning to Flin Flon, contact info@flinflon.ca or 204-271-1381.

The remainder of Council is dispersed across Manitoba. Mayor Fontaine is in Winnipeg and attending meetings by Zoom on a regular basis.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 16, 2025, 3:40pm

Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk and Flin Flon Fire Chief Jason Kuras have shared a video to the City of Flin Flon's Facebook page. you can find the video below:

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/16AAVKy24k/

Last night, a drone with an infrared scanner scanned a 350-hectare area in the Channing and Mandy Lake mining area directly south of Flin Flon.

They found about 350 hot spots within that area. The included image shows the scanned area and the hotspots detected.

Forty firefighters are working to extinguish those hot spots to ensure they don’t grow. These hotspots still have a great deal of fuel left around them.

On the east side of Trout Lake, a large flare-up occurred that had a direct route exposed towards Big Island, and into Flin Flon. Forty firefighters and air support are also currently mitigating this risk.

Because the fire spread so quickly in some areas, those areas still have a considerable amount of green vegetation that can reignite from hot spots, increasing the risk to the community.

Although things are going well as far as managing the fire goes, a great deal of risk remains.

Yellow lines on the map are areas that can be confirmed to be fully extinguished and pose no threat. Currently, that area lies on the north shore of Trout Lake. This area will grow as the team confirms other areas they believe are extinguished and safe.

Infrared drone scanning can only be conducted at night to avoid interfering with helicopter traffic during the day.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 15, 2025, 10:01pm

Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk has shared an update on the City of Flin Flon's Facebook page, which you can find here:

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/174VFg9QZa/

We apologize for no video yesterday. We have received requests that the community would prefer an update in the morning. After morning meetings, we will provide updates if there’s new information to deliver.

Critical businesses have begun to re-enter in order to clean, re-stock, and ensure everything is in place. There are guidelines in place, as mentioned in the last update, based on what the RCMP is comfortable with.

These guidelines will not apply to the general community when they start returning. They are in place right now due to the fact that there are no health services, limited fire protection, and law enforcement available.

A drone will fly today to collect infrared information near the Mandy Mine and Channing area, identifying hotspots for crews to contain. This is the closest area of concern that may do damage to our community.

Mayor Fiddler of Creighton and Deputy Mayor Dallas-Funk were given an aerial overview of the fire. Active hot spots and flames are present around the community. The active fire line near the community is 82 kilometers long. The area was forecast to receive 20mm of rain yesterday, and only received 1mm.

Mayor and Council offer renewed support to the devastated community of Denare Beach and offer whatever help is possible.

Re-entry is based on guidelines that the Province has set based on emergency services available. Hospital facilities must be assessed, and safety-critical equipment recalibrated for service.

Meetings between the Northern Health Region and Flin Flon, Creighton & Denare Beach continue. The Deputy Mayor met with the Health Minister this afternoon, while the broader team will be meeting with the Health Minister in the morning.

We are trying to push forward. We recognize the mental, physical, and emotional toll this is taking on community members, and we are committed to getting the community home safely.

When the community re-enters, we will have a welcome centre established at the Whitney Forum, with hygiene kits and food supplies for those who need them, public health teams, insurance teams, and mental health services.

Wildfire Fighting Update with Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk, June 13, 2025, 10:02pm

A new update for June 13 from Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk can be found at the link below:

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1ASCTtYxvv/

There will be crews in the City of Flin Flon picking up garbage when the community re-enters, and dump fees will be waived for four weeks once the community starts arriving.

Included in those waived fees will be “white garbage”, aka large appliances like fridges, stoves, deep-freezers, etc.

We have continued conversations with the Northern Health Region about reinstating healthcare services. We will let the community know as soon as we have made concrete arrangements.

Manitoba Wildfire and Parks Canada have informed us that wildfire smoke is less likely to cause damage to property compared to the structural smoke created by a house fire.

However, we have not confirmed the status of local properties. Contact your insurance company to confirm whether you are covered for smoke damage by your policy.

On Saturday and Sunday, wildfire crews will be conducting infrared scanning to identify any remaining hot spots.

Patrols continue to monitor for hotspots and have extinguished four active spots that were near structures.

A new fire was identified west of Cranberry Portage, but was quickly extinguished by Manitoba Wildfire.

East of Flin Flon, crews were able to contain a large flare-up through a large helicopter equipped with a large bucket and the support of crews on the ground (image included in video).

Wildfire Fighting Update with Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk, June 12, 2025, 9:56pm

Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk shared a video update on the City of Flin Flon Facebook page this evening, which you can watch here:

Fire crews are holding the line and the weather is in our favour, allowing crews to push into deeper locations.

As conditions are stabilizing, we have started a conversation with the Northern Health Region and and asked that they begin re-instating core healthcare services in the city.

We have also started identifying critical businesses that can begin coming into the community to re-establish operations, with some guidelines and regulations.

Premier Wab Kinew and Speaker of the House/our local MLA Tom Lindsay visited the community today to meet with firefighters and the command centre to see the hard work that has gone into protecting the community.

Wildfire Fighting Update with Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk, June 11, 2025, 10:41pm:

Cooler temperatures worked in our favour, and fire crews continued to work on hot spots around the community and along the fire line.

The team has continued work on the re-entry plan and hopes to utilize it soon.

A team from Parks Canada is stationed at Baker’s Narrows, and their command centre is based in City Hall.

The cooking crew from Chicken Chef are keeping the fire department and emergency workers fed.

Councillor Judy Eagle is leading the pet wellness team, with a small crew.

Alison Dallas-Funk is supporting the cooking team and managing communications.

A small utilities team remains in Flin Flon to ensure water services continue running and remain potable.

A small team of Administration and Works & Operations staff ensures critical continuity plans are in place, and a large fuel truck driver ensures critical equipment can continue running.

The RCMP continues to monitor our community and keep people and property safe.

Cranberry Portage recently announced that re-entry into their community would begin on June 14, and we recognise it raises questions about our own timelines.

The fire is currently 25km from Cranberry Portage, and they are somewhat protected by burned forest following fires from the previous year that burned off a lot of fuel.

This is not the case in Flin Flon. The fire line remains “right against our community”, with little buffer created by previous forest fires. If the weather becomes hot and dry again, our safety situation may still change rapidly. Our top priority is ensuring that a return to Flin Flon is decisively safe.

We have also seen scams circulating in the wake of the crisis, soliciting fraudulent sales or donations.

If you want to donate money to support evacuees and recovery, organisations like the Canadian Red Cross and Northern Neighbours are reputable organisations to support.

An update from Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk regarding developing plans for re-entry into Flin Flon, June 10, 10:35pm

Deputy Mayor Alison Dallas-Funk recently shared an update on the re-entry plan into Flin Flon, which we have shared on the City of Flin Flon Facebook. We will upload it to Youtube once we have fixed some technical issues.

Key Messages:

Mayor and Council acknowledge the tremendous loss in Denare Beach and wish to provide help where needed.

The City of Flin Flon is working on a re-entry plan for the community with Unified Command, including the Office of the Fire Commissioner, Parks Canada, Emergency Measures Organization, and Flin Flon’s fire protection team.

A timeline for re-entering is not fixed. It’s dependent on meeting critical conditions.

This includes the condition of the fire, and the availability of safety services to return to regular community service.

Currently, all safety services, including the RCMP and fire department, are directed towards managing the fire.

Hospital services must also be restored before it is safe to return.

Once these services are restored, we can begin phasing the community back in.

We know that the situation is frustrating and difficult. Our number one priority is to keep people safe.

When we have more information about timelines, we will let the community know promptly.

An update on fire conditions and animal wellness checks will come tomorrow.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 9, 2025, 12:35pm

Conditions today continue to help with firefighting efforts, with low winds and higher humidity.

There have been no structure fires in Flin Flon to date. Our crews continue to extinguish hot spots as they are identified.

Operations at the Flin Flon airport remain available to support firefighting efforts. Animal wellness checks continue.

As this is an active and volatile situation, we are still under a mandatory evacuation order, as well as a state of emergency. Only authorized emergency personnel are permitted to enter the community.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 8, 2025, 1:21pm

We still have not had any structural fires in Flin Flon, and the northerly wind is pushing the fire away from the town. Roaming patrols continue to identify and address hotspots in the community.

Manitoba Wildfire is addressing ongoing hotspots around the airport area with the help of air support.

Ground crews are working around the Camp Whitney area today.

As this is an active and volatile situation, we are still under a mandatory evacuation order, as well as a state of emergency. Only authorized emergency personnel are permitted to enter the community.

Wildfire Fighting Update, 9:44pm:

No structures in Flin Flon have been lost as of this evening. The fire has not advanced due to favourable winds blowing the fire back on itself, allowing crews to patrol and monitor for hot spots.

As this is an active and volatile situation, we are still under a mandatory evacuation order, as well as a state of emergency. Only authorized emergency personnel are permitted to enter the community.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 7, 2025, 11:13am

We have lost no structures in the Channing area and Mitchell Road as of this morning.

Crews will be focused on protecting the south side of Flin Flon, up the western and eastern ends of the city.

The wind has shifted and is blowing from the north, pushing the fire back onto itself. Winds are calm this morning. Asset protection is in place and ready to go if required.

We would like to thank the communities, businesses, and individuals who are providing support to our firefighting efforts. Your generosity and support are welcome and greatly appreciated. The donations of food supplies have been exceptionally helpful as our logistics team works to ensure that everyone has adequate and nutritious meals.

Pet Wellness Checks in Flin Flon, June 6, 2025, 4:23pm

City Councillor Judy Eagle is currently in Flin Flon with emergency crews, and is preparing to conduct animal wellness checks for pets that have been left behind. Councillor Eagle is a critical part of our logistics team supporting the firefighting efforts.

Call Judy at 204-687-0073 to provide details about your pet.

The City of Flin Flon remains under a mandatory evacuation order and a local state of emergency.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 6, 2025, 8:19am

No structures have been lost in Flin Flon or Creighton as of last night.

Winds in the area are now blowing from the south, resulting in heavy smoke and fire moving towards the south side of Flin Flon.

Fire protection including sprinklers have been set up, and fire crews will be working in the Channing area to protect property in the area.

The Sherridon, Creighton, and Wolf Lake fires have merged: the fire is now approximately 140 kilometers long, and 5 kilometers wide.

Of the 260 personnel deployed on the ground, approximately 100 are assisting Creighton, while 150 are assisting Flin Flon.

With a team of 260 dedicated and experienced personnel holding back the fire, neither Flin Flon nor Creighton have lost structures so far. Volunteer firefighters from departments across Manitoba are covering the area from Creighton to Baker's Narrows.

The fire has moved further into Manitoba to the southeast of Flin Flon and Creighton. Asset protection is being implemented in the Channing area, and the southern parts of Flin Flon.

Wildfire Fighting and Information for Evacuees, June 4, 2025, 8:36am

Currently, 200-250 personnel are fighting the fire. At this time, Flin Flon has not seen any structural fires, and as of 11:30pm, Creighton has not either.

Equipment has been deployed to protect the airport and structures at Baker’s Narrows. Though airport staff have been evacuated, no structures have been lost, and the airport remains secure and operational for emergency aircraft with the help of trained emergency staff.

It is not safe for residents to return to Flin Flon right now. Evacuees should prepare for the possibility that it will be some time until the situation has stabilized to the point that returning is safe.

We understand that this is an incredibly challenging time for everyone who has had to leave their homes, and our priority is first the preservation of life, then the preservation of property.

Today, crews are focused on areas to the west of Creighton.

Wildfire Fighting Update, June 2, 2025, 9:10am:

Things went well yesterday despite the strong winds: there are no structure fires in Flin Flon, and no additional structure fires in the Baker's Narrows area.

Flin Flon is holding strong and we are continuing to battle the fire.

Keeping Misinformation At Bay, June 1, 4:41pm

There have been no fatalities or injuries as a result of firefighting efforts in any of our affected communities so far.

False rumours about fatalities or injuries at the Club Fire have been a serious barrier to our firefighters being able to focus on battling the blaze.Volunteers from all of the communities involved have been bombarded with phone calls and messages from worried loved ones trying to track them down and make sure they're okay.

It puts stress on our firefighters, and on the families they left to help protect our community.

We assure you that we will share significant events that impact our community members, our firefighters, or their families as soon as we are aware of them.

Wildfire Fighting Update and Support for Evacuees, June 1, 2025, 3:51pm:

No fire has breached the perimeter or affected any assets within Flin Flon.

There have been no accidents, injuries, or fatalities among firefighters on the ground.

Access Flin Flon primary care providers through QDoc if needed. You just need your health card number. For support, please contact 1 833 736 2362.

If you’re displaced in Dauphin, you can go to the Rotary Dauphin Arena. It’s the main location for people displaced staying in Flin Flon. They are serving breakfast, lunch, and supper.

In The Pas, you can go to the Gordon Lathlin Arena or the Wescana Inn.

In Snow Lake, call 2-11, and it will connect you with Councillor Judy Eagle, who will help connect you with help and answers.

We are in communication with the Premier, Office of the Fire Commissioner, EMO, Northern Affairs, and the affected communities.

You can visit www.cityofflinflon.ca for councillor contacts if you need more information.

Winds have picked up to an extreme degree, and we have lost the last 12 hours of firefighting progress.

Fire crews are ramping up in the Bakers Narrows area to defend the airport and nearby structures.

Heavy-lift choppers are flying and dropping water, which is making a tangible impact for protecting strategic areas.

Flin Flon has remained safe. The risk to our community has increased, but crews are on guard and ensuring the fire does not breach the perimeter highway.

Wildfire Update, June 1, 9:00am

Fire crews have thus far contained the fire outside the city's perimeter highway, and as of last night, there are no structural fires in the city. We will post more information as it becomes available today.

Electricity is coming back online throughout parts of the city, as Manitoba Hydro continues working to restore power to affected areas. Utility systems are back online within the city.

Firefighters stopped the fire in the Baker's Narrows area from becoming a total loss to all properties, however, some properties and structures were affected, and for now, we do not have information on which properties were affected.

We're incredibly grateful for all of the support that departments from across Manitoba have provided us. They've done an outstanding job protecting our homes and the town we love. Our utmost gratitude goes out to all of those who have taken time away from their homes and families to put themselves in harm's way.

Club Wildfire Community Update, May 28, 2025, 10:23am:

Wildland, Creighton FD, and Flin Flon FD continue to respond to the Club Fire north of town. Representatives from the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) and Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) are also on-site to support our team.

For now, the situation is considered stable, but this may change. Members of the OFC will be doing an aerial survey this morning to assess the situation more broadly.

We have also sent a test text message and email of the Flin Flon Connect direct messaging system. The test appears to have been a success, and registration is live at https://www.cityofflinflon.ca/p/flin-flon-connect. We will be sharing more instructions for registering for Flin Flon Connect shortly.

A joint meeting between regional authorities is scheduled again for 11:00am today.

Some urgent and critical reminders:

NO BACKCOUNTRY TRAVEL UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Not only can we not afford any more fires, but EMS callouts into the woods currently endanger the safety of emergency workers as well. The risk of getting hurt or stuck at this moment is not worth it.

NO DRONE FLIGHTS. Yesterday, we can confirm that active water bombers had to be grounded because of drones detected in the area. It does not matter if you see aircraft or not. You are putting lives at risk. You may be fined $15, 000 if you are found guilty of violating this law.

With every decision you make, consider safety. Postpone unnecessary travel. Do not venture out to try to get a better view. We are all members of the same community. We are getting through this together.

Pre-Evacuation Notice, May 27, 2025, 7:40pm

The City of Flin Flon is advising residents that a pre-alert for possible evacuation is now in effect.

The pre-alert is being issued as a result of the dry conditions and the proximity of the fires. Residents are advised to stay alert and begin planning for a potential evacuation which could occur on short notice should the situation escalate.

Emergency Services suggests residents prepare in the following ways:

  • Ensure vehicles are fueled and ready for travel.
  • Prepare an emergency kit which includes:
  • Prescriptions medications.
  • Important documents such as passports, papers etc.
  • Computers/laptops.
  • Valuables and items that are meaningful to you.
  • Personal items (clothing, toiletries, phone chargers etc.)
  • Supplies for pets.
If you are a vulnerable person and need assistance in the event of an evacuation please register with us at City Hall by filling out a vulnerable person's form or calling 833 210 6435.

Should the situation escalate an Evacuation Centre will be set up and details will be provided.

Stay tuned for daily updates.

Updates will be provided on all of our social media channels, website, and with the local media to ensure messaging regarding the situation is shared as widely as possible.

Do Not Fly Drones Near Wildfires, May 27, 2025, 1:15pm

The City of Flin Flon's Emergency Management Officer will be meeting with the Town of Creighton this afternoon at approximately 2:00pm for a comprehensive update about the fire at the Creighton Landfill. We will provide further updates as soon as more information is available.

For now, we remind residents that *flying drones near wildfires is illegal*.

If drones are spotted in the airspace near a wildfire, all air support must be grounded for the safety of pilots, depriving air support from firefighters on the ground.

If you are flying a drone around a wildfire, you are hindering firefighting efforts.

Drone pilots found guilty of flying their drones near wildfires illegally can be fined up to $15, 000. It does *not* matter whether you see or hear any aircraft in the area.

Clean Air Sanctuary: Flin Flon Community Hall, May 27, 2025: 11:30am

Carbon air filters are being installed in the Flin Flon Community Hall rooftop units to help clean the smoke from the air.

In the event that air quality deteriorates with due to wind direction, The Flin Flon Community Hall will be a fresh air sanctuary for community members who need it.

While crews address the fire, we recommend all residents keep their windows and doors closed, and to keep air conditioners or air purifiers circulating if your home has them.

Creighton Landfill Fire Update, May 27, 2025, 9:30am

Wildland firefighters are also currently supporting the Creighton FD, and Flin Flon FD remains on standby. Creighton FD currently indicates favourable winds are pushing the fire away from the community.

Creighton FD Responding to Fire At Creighton Landfill, May 26, 2025

Creighton Fire Department is on-site responding to a fire reported at the Creighton landfill.

The City of Flin Flon Fire Department is in contact with the City of Creighton, and will respond if requested.

Manitoba Issues Province-wide Fire Ban, May 22, 2025, 8:28am

Effective 8:00am this morning, Manitoba has issued a total burn ban across the Province of Manitoba. This includes all burning and campfires, including in approved fire pits.

You can find more information on provincial fire restrictions by area at https://www.gov.mb.ca/conservatio.../Restrictions/index.html. Flin Flon falls within Area 14, and Cranberry Portage, The Pas, and Grass River Provincial Park fall within Area 13.

All fire and off-road travel bans within Flin Flon municipal boundaries remain in effect.

Fire and Off-Road Travel Ban Still In Effect, May 21, 2025, 11:50am

With the weather warming up and pleasant evenings ahead, we want to remind Flin Flonners that the fire and off-road travel ban is still in effect within Flin Flon's city limits.

We have received next to no precipitation since the restrictions were first put in place, and our local vegetation has been slow to green over the last month.

The recent fire near Cranberry Portage and ongoing efforts to fight the wildfire in The Pas and Saskatchewan's Narrow Hills Provincial Park demonstrate the very real risk posed by current conditions.

If you are playing in the woods outside of Flin Flon's city limits, we ask that you ensure you're up to date with your host community's fire restrictions, and exercise good judgment above and beyond what's legally required. Carefully consider where and how you travel, and think twice about how you throw out your cigarettes or your doobies.

Please help us work together as a community to keep ourselves and our neighbours safe, and to ensure we have a beautiful wilderness to enjoy for many summers to come.

Provincial Fire Danger Advisory, May 9, 2025, 4:05pm

The Province of Manitoba has issued a Fire Danger Advisory through the Alert Ready system, stating the following:

"Southern and Central areas of Manitoba have a high to extreme fire danger. Current conditions pose a serious threat to public safety, and emergency response may be limited given the current demand on provincial and local firefighting resources."

The situation in Flin Flon has not changed, and the community is not in immediate danger.

However, the alert does reinforce the fact that emergency services are currently very busy, and it is extremely important that we all do our part not to create an additional burden on our regional firefighters and first responders. Please follow all fire bans and restrictions on motorized off-road travel, and exercise good judgment above and beyond what is legally required.

Highway Travel and Wildfire Update, May 9, 2025

As of this morning, Highway 106 (also known as the Hanson Lake Highway) is closed due to a wildfire near Caribou Creek. For more information, call the Saskatchewan Highways hotline at 1-844-754-4929 for more information.

As of right now, Highway 10 remains open, and winds are currently favourable to maintaining access on the highway.

Off-road Travel Ban, May 8, 2025

In addition to the existing restrictions on fire within city limits, motorized off-road traffic is now prohibited within Flin Flon's city limits, due to the potential to ignite dry grass and foliage with hot engine components.

This includes off-road-specific vehicles like ATVs, SXS's, and dirt bikes, as well as off-road travel in passenger vehicles like pick-up trucks.

While we understand the inconvenience (especially when the weather is so gorgeous), we appreciate your help in keeping our community as safe as possible during these high-risk conditions!

City-wide Fire Ban Update, May 5, 2025

Yesterday, we implemented a complete fire ban within the City of Flin Flon until further notice due to the ongoing dry conditions. Below are additional details in terms of what is and isn't currently permitted within city limits.

All fire permits are currently suspended, and the fire ban includes, but may not be limited to:
  • All Non-Gas Fire Pits
  • Open Fires
  • Charcoal/pellet BBQs

  • Incinerators
  • Chimineas
  • Exploding Targets
  • Fireworks
Propane BBQs and ULC-approved propane-fuelled fire pits are permitted. Lawnmowers, including push and ride-on lawnmowers, are also permitted.

Stay tuned for ongoing updates about fire conditions and preventative measures!

City Wide Fire Ban, May 4, 2025

Stay tuned for further updates through the week.
