Overview

Where We Are

Flin Flon is north of the 54th parallel, on the border of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and in the heart of the boreal forest. It has a unique geography for the region, with imposing cliffs and large outcrops of bedrock jutting through seemingly endless forests of spruce and pine.

Though you’re living the northern life, you’re far from remote: the nearest major urban centre is only five hours away.

Two Provinces, One City

The City of Flin Flon crosses provincial boundaries and has residential and commercial properties in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

We also have close connections with the town of Creighton, Saskatchewan, and the Village of Denare Beach, both of which are just a hop-skip over the MB/SK border. Flin Flon is a winter lover’s paradise, with a sunny, dry climate that takes the edge off the coldest days, and a long season that will have snowmobilers and cross-country skiers out and about as late as April.

Once the snow melts, warm, idyllic northern summers will make you forget you even own a parka.

Who We Are

A Thriving Artistic Community

When the Hudbay Mining and Smelting Company founded the mining camp that would become Flin Flon, they preferred to hire miners who were also musicians, artists, and entertainers.

That legacy continues in Flin Flon to this day, from raucous musical nights at Johnny’s Social Club to the top-tier talent that performs every year at the Blueberry Jam. You’ve never seen this much talent packed into a small town before.

The Loudest Hockey Fans in Manitoba

The Whitney Forum is hallowed ground in Manitoba’s hockey history, home to the Flin Flon Bombers and the launching pad for hockey legends like Bobby Clarke and Reggie Leach. Our fans cheer so loudly, we legally need a hearing hazard warning posted at the arena doors.

Of course, there are plenty of adult and youth hockey leagues hosted at the arena so that you can build your own personal hockey legacy.

A Life Lived Outdoors

Flin Flon’s topography is unique in Manitoba. There’s so much wilderness here, it can be challenging to get to know it all, but a thriving culture of fishing lodges, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers will help you map the lay of the land.

A City That Shows Up

Flin Flon’s community pride is palpable: events are always packed, our residents keep our streets clean, and folks even put their shopping carts away in the parking lot. Flin Flon loves Flin Flon, and it shows.

Local Landmarks

Flinty’s Statue and Discovery Trail

Flin Flon’s name comes from Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin, the main character of a science fiction dime novel called The Sunless City. Though he is commemorated throughout the City, his most prominent presence is at the front of Flin Flon’s community campground, where he welcomes visitors and residents at the eastern entrance to the City.

Starting at the statue, the Discovery Trail runs beside the campground and contains interpretive signage that introduces visitors and newcomers to Flin Flon’s history, geography, and wildlife.

Flinty’s Boardwalk

Flinty’s Boardwalk is the easiest way to enjoy a leisurely walk around town: it’s a three-kilometre trail that follows the shore of Ross Lake and showcases the best of Flin Flon’s geography.

Whitney Forum

The historic Whitney Forum is home to Flin Flon’s illustrious Flin Flon Bombers Junior A hockey team, which has spawned several national hockey superstars. Get loud with your fellow fans: there’s a reason they call it The Zoo.

Camp Whitney

A remote camp at the southern tip of Little Athapap Lake, Camp Whitney is a unique asset owned and operated by the City of Flin Flon, featuring amenities such as solar power, bunkhouses, a kitchen and dining hall, sandy beaches, a volleyball court and more. It’s a little slice of off-the-grid living rentable by private parties, businesses, and community groups!
