The Local Economy

Mining

Flin Flon was founded as a mining community, and the industry is alive and well in our city. Many Flin Flonians work at Hudbay in Flin Flon and at their Lalor Mine in Snow Lake. To the west of the City, Strong Pine and Foran both have major mining operations in development.

Retail & Services
Flin Flon serves a broader region of ~12,000, including the neighbouring community of The Pas, as well as Mathias Colomb Cree Nation and Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation. It includes major retail outlets like Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire, as well as essential community services like banking, pharmacies, insurance, law offices, restaurants, auto and heavy mechanical shops, and more.

Healthcare
Healthcare is a major employer in Flin Flon: more than 400 people are employed by the NRHA in the Flin Flon area, including healthcare professionals, administrative and support staff, and senior leadership.

Education

Approximately 200 people are employed by the Flin Flon School District, including educational and administrative staff. The School District also supports local businesses and non-profit organizations by sharing space and resources.

Tourism and Hospitality

Flin Flon has a thriving community of fishing lodges and eco-tourism operators offering fishing, and historical experiences. Along with the well-recognized Bakers Narrows Provincial Park and campground, these businesses support our local shops and restaurants through substantial tourism traffic during the summer months.
